On the commute to work this morning I was following a big truck while
passing through the traffic lights... In the middle of the intersection, I discovered that... the lights had already switched to RED!
My
first thought was: if I get a ticket, I deserve it because I wasn't
paying attention. I wasn't cautious enough and I was kind of mad at
myself.
My second thought was: No one hit my car and no one honked at me... What a relief!
And then it hit me! No, not a car... a question :-) Why do they even put traffic lights in the middle of streets?
To make us follow the rules.
Ok,
but why would we need to follow the rules? I am a little rebel
myself, or a non-conformist... Why do I follow the rules (usually)?
We have two choices for why we follow the rules:
1. Out of fear: to avoid a traffic ticket, in my case this morning
2. Out of respect for other people...
The
traffic lights tell us whose turn it is to drive now. Everyone gets
their turn and it's fair and safe this way. And when I passed through
red lights I did not respect someone else's rights. How sad...
Showing the respect to another person is a beautiful and direct implication of love. Unconditional love.
So, let the second option drive our behavior. Let's follow the rules out of LOVE to others!
